ontrary to popular belief,
practice does not make per-
fect. As Vince Lombardi re-
minds us: "Only perfect practice
makes perfect." And one
place to continue on your
journey toward perfection
is the practice facility at In-
dian Wells, which provides
access to the short-game area
and unlimited range balls for
two hours for a flat fee of $20.
"Some practice facilities sell
buckets of range balls; we just do
the flat rate," said PGA Head Golf
Professional Tom Burley. "Most
golfers who are really interested in
practicing their game and spending
quality time doing so enjoy the flat
rate because they will get a great
value for the amount of time spent
and balls actually hit."
With that two-hour window in
mind, there are some things you can
do to most effectively use that time.
"When you are working on your
game, you want to mix up your rou-
tine to help stay focused," Burley said.
Here are four tips to get the most
out of your practice session:
1
Make sure you eat something and
are well hydrated before coming
out to practice. Also, you should do
some stretching and get your body
ready to put the work in.
2
Start out hitting chip shots from
the short-game area. You can re-
ally get a feel for the way your body,
arms and hands are working before
you start taking full swings if you
begin in the short-game area.
3
After spending time around the
chipping green, head over to the
range for some full swings. Take your
full-swing session in two separate
parts: irons and metalwoods. Start
with short irons, as clubs with loft are
easier to hit straighter and will allow
you to build up your confidence for
the session before you move on to
the longer clubs in your bag.
4
End the practice session with
more short game. Make sure you
spend adequate time hitting putts
and even a few sand shots. To get the
most out of your time on the practice
green, try a few putting games such
as the ladder drill or around-the-
world during your session. Building
confidence is a big key with success-
ful putters – and the only way to gain
confidence is with practice.
