A TEE
TIME
T
he Desert Two-Ball
Challenge brought
heated competition to
the Coachella Valley from
April 20-22, and even with
pride and plenty of great
prizes on the line, the
event featured a fun
and relaxed feel.
Sixty players regis-
tered, and two-player
teams competed in a
Friday scramble at the
Westin Mission Hills Gary
Player Course, followed by a
better-ball format Saturday at
Classic Club and a shamble
Sunday on the Players
Course at Indian Wells Golf
Resort.
Jeffrey Howard and Gre-
gory Snider won the gross
competition, shooting 196
(66-68-62) to win by five
strokes. Perhaps even more
impressive was that their
Sunday score of 10-under par
was six shots lower than any
other carded that day, pro-
viding them plenty of cush-
ion as they played the final
few holes.
The team of Todd Volkers
and Cole Volkers – second in
gross scoring with scores of
65, 68 and 68 for a three-day
total of 201 – secured the net
championship. Both winning
teams, as well as those that
placed second and third in
the gross and net scoring, re-
ceived great prizes that in-
cluded golf twosomes at each
of the three courses, a two-
night stay in Indian Wells
and dinner at each of the
course's fine-dining restau-
rants.
Director of Golf Joe
Williams said that Howard
and Snider really ramped up
their games when the pres-
sure was on.
"The winners' score of 62
in a shamble was pretty im-
pressive," he said. "To me,
that's where the tournament
was won. On the final day,
these guys really got it
done."
Williams added that get-
ting to play three premier
Valley courses on consecutive
days at the height of the busy
season really makes the tour-
nament special.
