J
onas Conlan has spent more than 20 years
working at golf courses in the Coachella
Valley. And last month, the La Quinta resi-
dent took over as the Director of Agronomy at
Indian Wells Golf Resort, where he will oversee
the Players and Celebrity courses.
We caught up Conlan shortly after he joined
the team:
What attracted you to Indian Wells? I was
drawn to here due to a few simple things –
the overall beauty of the property, the golf
courses are spectacular, and the actual design
and playability of them was also very
attractive.
What are your primary responsibilities? I'm
responsible for the maintenance programs for
both courses, the practice facilities and also all
around our Pavilion. Preparing operating
budgets, managing staff and working with my
two superintendents James and Jacob to see
that day-to-day maintenance procedures are
completed are a few things I do. It's a very
large property with a wonderful team, and as a
result we all work together to operate an effec-
tive and efficient facility.
how would you describe the two golf
courses? Very well designed and challenging.
They are similar in quality of turf and playing
conditions, but the layout of each is very
different. The Players Course is a little more
open, and is slightly longer. The Celebrity
Course requires some accurate tee shots and
there are 105 bunkers that accent the fairways
and green surrounds. Throughout the course
you'll find large landscape areas that are filled
with wild flowers. When they are in bloom
the visual impact is quite stunning and
beautiful to see.
What do you like to do when you're not
working? I enjoy spending time with my fam-
ily. My wife Janina, daughter Laila (16) and
sons Lance (8) and Landon (4). Taking some
family vacations are a treat. I also enjoy play-
ing golf and I try to play as much as possible.

takes a lot of effort and energy
