P
ractically everyone enjoys
going to the beach and lying
on the sand. But on the golf
course, being in the sand isn't quite
as much fun. However, there are
some time-tested tips that will help
immensely should you find yourself
on the beach at the golf course.
So, we asked PGA Head Golf
Professional Tom Burley for some
pointers when playing out of fair-
way bunkers. And the best thing?
You can try his advice on the Players
and Celebrity courses, which recently
underwent renovations in which
every bunker was completely re-
stored with new sand.
"Being that the bunkers have such
great sand, you are going to want to
make sure you know how to play
from them if, by chance, you end up
in one," Burley said. Here's how:
>
Choke up a little bit on the golf
club, as you'll be less likely to hit be-
hind the ball.
>
Due to choking up, make sure to
take one extra club for distance.
>
Play the ball in the center of your
stance with your hands slightly for-
ward at address.
>
As the takeaway begins, make
sure your lower body stays very
quiet and still.
>
You are going to want to keep
your feet very stable as your weight
transfers during the back swing.
>
As your down swing starts, make
sure your weight is transferring to
your lead side to help promote strik-
ing the ball first.
>
Remember to finish your swing.
Accelerate the club head through the
entire shot and never leave the club
stuck in the sand.
