MEET THE TEAM W ith the hiring of new Director of Agronomy Nick Leitner, you could say Indian Wells Golf Resort has found a diamond in the rough. Leitner, who took over the position on September 12, got his start in the turfgrass industry working on the base- ball fields at the University of Arizona. "It was a very exciting experience and I learned a lot of what goes into maintaining a ball field," Leitner said. He's also served as Assistant Superin- tendent at Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells and, most recently, as Director of Grounds at Marrakesh Country Club in Palm Desert. Here, he discusses his new position and the two courses at Indian Wells Golf Resort: u u u What are your responsibilities as Director of Agronomy? To ensure that the playing conditions on both the Celebrity and Players courses meet the expectations of our customer base and continue to grow the name throughout the game of golf. u u u How did you get into agronomy? I became an agronomist when I was at- tending the University of Arizona, I grew up playing the game of golf and other sports. Turfgrass always interested me and I have never looked back. u u u What's your first impression of the golf courses? There is no real secret. But I believe if you have a great team and you put in the time and work you can have a very successful operation. u u u What do you hope to accomplish in your role at IWGR? My goal is to create a great team environment among my staff and ensure that we meet the ex- pectations for course conditions. u u u Are there any major projects you'll be working on in the immediate future? The first major project that I will be working on is making sure both courses have a successful overseed, once I have done that I will begin tackling other projects throughout the property. u u u What do you like to do in your spare time?
