C
onditions on the Players and
Celebrity courses at Indian
Wells Golf Resort are very
solid right now. We had some
cold, wet weather in January, but we've
come out of it looking great. Here's the
latest from the agronomy department:

We don't take on many major projects
during this time of the year, but we're al-
ways working on a lot of little projects.
Landscape areas are always a priority.
Maintaining the flower beds on
Celebrity Course is something we focus
on heavily. On the Players Course, we've
been addressing some barranca areas
near holes 8 and 9 and we've done a lot
of work on the one between holes 5 and
14. When they get cleaned out and
prepped they look really nice.
The next big projects will take place in
June, when we dive into our aerification
process on both courses.

Both the Players and Celebrity courses
were recently honored for outstanding
playing conditions by Golf Advisor and
Greenskeeper.org, respectively.
On the Players Course, I think the lay-
out is tremendous and John Fought did
an amazing job with the design and rout-
ing. The course is fair and right in front
of you. I love that we have multiple tee-
ing areas that allow everyone to enjoy.
The green complexes are large, with sub-
tle breaks toward the wash, and the
bunkers are big and challenging.
Achieving optimal playing conditions
are a combination of several things. You
have to be blessed with nice soils, which
we have. You also need to have good
quality water and an efficient irrigation
system; we have those as well. And, you
need to put in the hard work that it takes
on a daily basis so you can achieve the
conditions that you want. Sometimes,
the latter is the most important.
