IW's Eric Solander wins fifth
annual Indian Wells Pro-Am
O
ne day before the New England Patri-
ots won Super Bowl LIII over the Los
Angeles Rams, Indian Wells Golf Resort's
PGA Lead Teaching Professional Eric Solan-
der scored a big victory of his own.
On a wet and rainy day on February 3,
Solander shot a 2-under-par 70 on the Play-
ers Course to capture the fifth annual Indian
Wells Pro-Am. PGA Tour Canada player
Riley Wheeldon also shot 70, but lost in a
card-off to Solander, who took home the
$3,000 winner's check, while Wheeldon
cashed in on the $1,500 second-place prize.
The team of Karli Sullivan, Craig Cald-
well, Joel Brunk and Scott Winant took first
place in the amateur competition with a
score of 26-under par.
But it was Solander who battled the ele-
ments best to capture the professional title
after playing in his fourth Pro-Am. His top
finish previously was second place.
"It felt great to get a win with such a great
field," he said.
Michael Block, last year's champion and
the Southern California PGA Section Player
of the Year, finished two shots back with an
even-par 72.
While it rained throughout the day, the
weather couldn't dampen the spirit of the
competitors in the sold-out event.
"The tournament is something I look for-
ward to," Solander said. "It's a great course,
great competitors, and my amateur team is
hilarious. We laughed the whole time.
Thank you to the city of Indian Wells for
putting on such a great event."
