PRO'S CORNER BooK a tEE tiME > C L I C K H E R E F O R D E TA I L S O N G O L F C L I N I C S , L E S S O N S A N D M O R E I t's the start of a new year and if you have yet to firm up your resolutions when it comes to lowering your scores, don't fret. We've enlisted Indian Wells' PGA Head Golf Professional Tom Burley to suggest a few ways to jump-start your efforts… 1 if you want to consistently shave strokes from your score, course management is a key area to focus on. Most golfers tend to step up to the tee and swing for the fences. By manag- ing the course, you can effectively play away from trouble areas during your round and hopefully avoid any poten- tial disasters. From tee to green, play to more open areas of the fairway, or play to the safe side of the green. If you put yourself in difficult short-sided situations around the greens, it makes it tough to consis- tently score well. Always try to give yourself the best chance for success on any given hole. 2 improving your short game can knock some shots off your score- card. While all aspects of the game are important, there are none more signifi- cant than the short game. Getting the ball up and down from off the green is a major key for those who consistently shoot low numbers. Spend more time practicing on and around the green than you would with the full swing on the driving range. Hitting the long ball will only go so far if you cannot get the ball in the hole. Traditionally, the best players on any professional tour have the best statistics on or around the greens. 3 taking golf lessons to address weak areas of your game can make a big difference. Understanding the cause and effect in golf shots will really help you understand what is going wrong with a certain part of your game you might be struggling with. I have taught a lot of golf lessons over the past 10 years, and it is amazing how such eas- ily correctable things go so long with- out any attention or correction. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard from my students that they wished they had taken lessons sooner, as it would have saved them so much agony on the course. You don't need to struggle this year – locate your PGA professional, get some help, and lower your scores. rESolvE to iMProvE 3 ways to shave strokes from your scorecard in the new year SCHOOL IS IN SESSION T here's no better time than the start of a new year to rededicate yourself to working on your golf game. To that end, Indian Wells Golf Resort offers clinics five days a week to help you meet your goals. Held Tuesdays-Saturdays at 10 a.m., the 45-minute clinics are $29 per ses- sion. Clinics are usually conducted in small groups of up to eight students, and participants are encouraged to use the practice facilities at no charge following the sessions. > CLICK HERE to learn more.
