TO INDIAN WeLLs
T
he Troon Challenge National
Finals will take place Aug. 25-27
in Scottsdale, Ariz., but you and a
teammate can begin the journey at
Indian Wells Golf Resort.
The resort will host a regional
qualifier on Saturday, June 17, on
the Celebrity Course, and the
top net and gross teams
will advance to the finale,
which will feature a 36-
hole competition on the
North Course at the Boul-
ders in Carefree and the Pin-
nacle Course at Troon North in
Scottsdale.
Open to all amateurs, the qualifier
at Indian Wells will feature a two-
person modified best-ball shamble
in which each player hits a tee shot
and then plays their own ball in after
selecting the best shot off the tee.
The lower of the two scores is the
team score for the hole.
The entry fee for the 7:30 a.m.
shotgun start is $190 per two-player
team and includes golf, cart, range
balls and more.
T
he sixth-annual Desert Two Ball
Challenge turned out to be as
competitive as it was fun – and a
double eagle on the final day made the
difference.
Brandt Kuhn of Indian Wells made
an albatross on the fourth hole on the
Celebrity Course at Indian Wells Golf
resort, a key shot in the final round
that led he and teammate Casey
richards to a two-stroke victory in the
gross division. He holed out from 185
yards on the 500-yard par-5,
and he and Richards carded
a three-day total of 197.
Wayne maier of Palm
Desert and matt Klewein
took the net title, shooting
171 to also win by two
strokes. In each division,
only five strokes separated
first and fifth places.
The three-day event
opened with a two-ball
scramble April 21 at the
Westin mission hills, fol-
lowed by a better-ball event
at Classic Club the next day
and a shamble and awards banquet
April 23 at Indian Wells Golf resort. All
three properties are managed by Troon
Golf, and the event was conceived as a
way for golfers to challenge themselves
on a trio of the Coachella Valley's most
prestigious tracks with fun and varied
formats. Winners took home stay-and-
play packages from the three facilities.
