T
he third annual Indian
Wells Pro-Am Invita-
tional on Feb. 3-4 was
a touchdown in more
ways than one. The Super Bowl
weekend event not only pro-
duced an inspiring redemption
story in professional winner
Brian Miller, but proved to once
again be a highlight of the sea-
son at Indian Wells Golf Resort.
The event kicked
off with a Friday din-
ner and reception for
all participants at Vue
Grille & Bar. On Sat-
urday, amateurs were
grouped with the pros
as a full field of 26 teams teed it
up on the Players Course.
Miller, a former Saddleback
College and San Diego State
University player who has com-
peted on the mini tours for more
than a decade, avenged last
year's loss in a two-hole playoff
by carding four birdies over the
final six holes to shoot 65 and
take home the $3,000 winner's
check. He edged runner-up
Riley Wheeldon by two strokes.
"It was really cool to see
Brian win this year," said Direc-
tor of Golf Joe Williams, noting
that Miller also shot 65 last year
before losing in extra holes.
"He has played two pretty im-
pressive rounds at our place
over the last two years."
In the amateur division, the
Canadian team of Don Seretsky,
Steve Hess, Carl Hess and Brett
Hess shot 112 and won by four
strokes, earning a trip to
Whistler with accommodations
and two rounds of golf. Indian
Wells residents Allan Jones,
Gary Browne, Andy Fisher and
Peter Kim placed second and
won a trip to TPC Sawgrass.
The event was supported by
a long list of sponsors, headed
by the City of Indian Wells. A
Titleist-FootJoy virtual store
was set up for all amateurs to
shop for a tee prize of their
choosing. Participants enjoyed
Tito's Handmade Vodka at one
tee box and a barbeque station
at another, along with other
tastings around the course.
"This is absolutely one of our
biggest events of the year," said
Williams, who shot 71 to finish
in a tie for sixth among the
pros. "We're really pleased with
how it's gone, and we're going
to continue to grow it."
