7 simple steps to salvaging
saves from the sand
G
etting out of the sand
can be challenging for
amateur golfers. Many
players waste shots in the
bunker by not being aware of
what it takes to get the ball
cleanly out. Here are some tips
to help get the job done:
1
play the ball forward in
your stance – about three-
quarters of the way toward
your front foot.
2
most of your weight should
be stacked on the lead side,
with the club face slightly open.
3
your hands should be at or in
front of the ball at setup –
having them behind the ball cre-
ates a scooping motion that will
cause you to catch the ball on the
upswing, instead of the sand on
the downswing.
4
Set up with an open stance
and keep the clubface aimed
at the target, while keeping your
grip pressure nice and light.
5
Keep your lower
body stable. Feel as
if you're taking the
club away solely with
your arms, swinging
along your foot line
(outside-to-inside).
This will keep the
hosel out of play.
6
impact the
sand about 2-3
inches behind the ball.
Avoid hitting the ball
directly with the club face — let
the sand carry the ball out. Vary-
ing the depth of your divot will
affect how far the ball will carry.
7
make a complete finish after
impact as if you just hit a full
shot. Don't leave the club in the
sand; keep it moving to the finish.
