The annual event raises funds for the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation. Civic leader Bob Wein- berg created the foun- dation in 1982 as a way to provide emer- gency benefits to CHP employees and their families in times of crisis. More than $21 million in aid has been issued since its inception. "It's an organization that pro- vides financial support for fami- lies of fallen officers and also scholarships to the children of fallen officers," said CHP Offi- cer Stephanie Hamilton. Foundation assistance helped Elizabeth Martinez earn a bache- lor's degree from UCLA and a master's degree from SDSU. Her father, Officer Saul Martinez — a Latino Police Officer of the Year known locally as "el protector" — was killed in 1997 when he and his partner were checking on a car stopped on the shoul- der. An oncoming car barreled toward the men, and Martinez pushed his partner to safety. The four-player scramble will have a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $120 per player, or $45 per person for lunch-only par- ticipants. The entry fee includes golf, cart, access to the practice range, door prizes and lunch. Hole-in-one prizes will in- clude $10,000 and a 2014 Ford. A silent auction and raffle will be held at the luncheon. Deadline to enter is May 1. The event will take place on the Celebrity Course. tHe WinnerS are… T he team of Wayne Carter and Fred Meares took home the top prize in the Gross Divsion at the second annual Desert 2- Ball Challenge held April 12-13 at Indian Wells Golf Resort, Mission Hills and Classic Club, while the Net Division was won by Steve Hamm and William McMurray.
