Indian Wells Golf Resort's PGA Junior
League tees up fun competition for kids
T
he season is in full swing for Indian
Wells Golf Resort's PGA Junior League
team. The squad kicked off its schedule
in late April with a tie against a team
from Desert Willow Golf Resort, following two
weeks of practice led by Coach Eric Solander, the
Lead Teaching Professional at Indian Wells.
The Indian Wells team, which competes in nine-
hole match-play formats where rules and etiquette
are emphasized, is comprised of 12 players ages 8-
12 from Palm Desert, La Quinta
and Indian Wells.
"It's a totally developmental
league," Solander said. "It's like
Little League and tee ball. We play
a two-person scramble format, and it's really fun.
"We encourage sportsmanship, and golf eti-
quette is really important to us. We're not sticklers
on the rules, so we don't penalize. We just tend to
use those as teachable moments."
The players wear matching jerseys and team
camaraderie is emphasized, Solander said.
"We pair older kids to work with the younger
kids to help get across the team aspect," he added.
